Occasionally, a stopped clock may only need minor cleaning and oiling to put it back in running order. In most cases though, more detailed work is required.
When major service is performed, the movement (the clockwork mechanism) is completely disassembled, cleaned removing dirt and old oil.
All parts are thoroughly inspected such as, the wheels, pinions, ratchets, mainsprings, the escapement, striking and chiming components, and repairs are performed as needed. Pivots are polished and worn bushings are replaced . A second cleaning is then done before reassembly , lubrication, adjustment and testing.
Each clock repair is a little different and treated individually.
Antique clocks can need much more indepth restoration of worn and damaged components to bring them back into a good working condition.
